Easy Rider II, Day 10, March 26, 2022

So today I rode the Arizona Canal Trail back west 15 miles to Peoria, AZ, to watch the San Diego Padres play the Chicago Cubs in a preseason baseball game.

I haven’t attended a Padres game since my childhood in San Diego, when the team was a minor league franchise.

It turned out to be a great way to spend an afternoon that was really too hot (mid-90s) to enjoy bicycle touring. Wisely, I invested a couple of additional dollars to get a shady ballpark seat.

The teams tied 2-2. But there were several spectacular plays, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole spectacle.

The tunnels on the Arizona Trail are really creepy because the homeless use them for a variety of purposes (don’t look too closely).

I rode through several today but avoided one because it was too dark to see what I was riding over,  and I didn’t want to risk a flat.

In one of the tunnels, several homeless people yelled at me to alert me to their presence.

My room was not ready when I arrived at my overpriced Peoria hotel. So I changed clothes in a bathroom and locked my bike up in the hotel’s electrical closet.

The Uber from the hotel to the ballpark cost $9.

But after the game, Uber quoted me $27 for the return trip to the hotel. It was only four miles. So I walked back, enjoying the powerful, incense-like fragrance being emitted by the blossoming desert trees.

Here’s a lifetime first for me: When I was checking in to the hotel, the desk clerk asked me whether my credit card was prepaid. She apparently was concerned that my card might not be linked to a bank account and could lack sufficient funds to cover the $200 for the room.

Guess I must need a haircut. Road-burn tan doesn't help. Looking too disreputable these days.
