Easy Rider II, Day 8, March 24, 2022

So I was straddling my bike on the side of the road searching my phone for the directions to my Buckeye AZ hotel for the evening when in swoops Silverio, a touring cyclist heading in the other direction.

Silverio, 68, is heading south for Cabo San Lucas, he explained.

He and his wife Susan are Warm Showers hosts, he said, and she would be happy to host me at their house in Phoenix the following evening in his absence.

Turns out she was going to be busy but some friends of hers who are also Warm Showers hosts would be happy to host me, she said.

This is great news because the regional park north of Phoenix that I originally had been planning to stay in tomorrow night is full. Now I just need to come up with a plan for Saturday, the following day, when temps are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s here. It’s supposed to be cooler on Sunday. I’d rather wait for cooler weather to ride again since the route gets into some serious climbing after Phoenix.

The weather was very good for riding today, and the going, though not particularly scenic, was easy after a good night’s sleep and 2 breakfasts. I got a decent continental breakfast at my motel outside town, and then another with my coupon at the Space Lodge. I could have easily pedaled into Phoenix this afternoon. But the hotels are cheaper in Buckeye. So I opted for the shorter day today instead.

Insider tip: Bring your own sink stopper and detergent (photos below) to wash your shorts in the hotel sink, many of which are stopperless these days. Then roll the shorts up tightly in a towel, hang the shorts and they’ll be clean and mostly dry in the morning.

DM: 42.1; TM: 403.7; 4:07 ride time; avg. spd., 9.3 mph; 710 ft climb
