Easy Rider II, Day 17, April 2, 2022

No wonder I was getting tired

It was a very tough climb of 3,686 feet over 45.3 miles to Silver City NM for me today.

The difficulty took me by surprise because I had been thinking this would be a short, relatively easy day—almost a rest day.

But the first couple thousand feet of climbing, though never especially steep, was sustained. And then the second 2,000 feet of ascent was cumulative, through a seemingly endless series of long rollers.

Another odd thing is it wasn’t particularly hot today, with the high in the 70s. (It was 40 degrees last night, forcing to break out my puffy jacket for the first time during this tour.) But it sure felt hot pedaling ever-higher into the shadeless mountainous terrain.

This morning, I was using Google Maps to get back on route from the Lordsburg KOA. And all went well until I got to Hwy 90, the paved route to Silver City, tonight’s destination. At that point, Google wanted to send me via the Continental Divide hiking trail. What a disaster that would have been on a touring bike. Another Google Maps classic!

Love the historic Murray Hotel in Silver City’s old town, where I am staying tonight.

Tomorrow, I need to do another big climb to Hillsboro NM.

The Adventure Cycling Association says there’s a campsite in town, but there’s no address or contact information.

Some of the free campsites I’ve seen thus far on this tour seemed a bit too sketchy for my comfort, particularly since I am traveling solo. Hopefully somebody in town will know something about it or I may have to stealth camp again.

DM: 45.3; TM: 828.2; 6:22 hrs ride time; 7.1 avg. spd.; 3,686 ft climbing
