I spent much of today pedaling through the towering pines of the Sam Houston National Forest, and was thankful for the shade the trees provided since the temperature was on the rise.
I got no respite from the climbing, adding another 3,000 feet to my trip total.
But by late afternoon, the terrain was mostly flat or downhill. Could it be that my climbing days on this tour are over?
The Shepherd’s Sanctuary Campground, where I am staying tonight outside Shepherd TX, is truly a trip, as the youngsters used to say in the 1960s.
Peach Williamson, the campground’s proprietor, has amassed a mindbogglingly massive and eclectic collection of antiques over the years, and it’s on display here in her campground/museum.
I’m staying in the Elvis cabin. The fee for the cabin, along with shower and kitchen access, was $20. What a fabulous deal.
One grim piece of news: The local forecast shows a chance for thunderstorms every day for a week, starting tomorrow.
Guess I will be moving the raincoat to the top of the pannier stack.
