Easy Rider II, Day 36, April 27, 2022

There were plenty of rolling hills on the route again today. But these were not as steep or as long as yesterday’s.

The landscape also is becoming noticeably lusher and greener as I head east. The roadside wildflowers were truly spectacular.

I ran into Casey and Erin again this afternoon. They said they camped behind a church in La Grange last night. Alas, their free campsite was close to an active train track. So both were feeling blah today from a lack of sleep.

They are taking a day off tomorrow to replace the smartphone that Casey somehow lost.

Snake Story 2: There’s a football-field-sized patch of grass separating my Navasota motel tonight from the fast food restaurants. I decided to walk along the more-distant frontage road to the restaurants, because I was wearing shorts and flip-flops and feared being eaten alive by chiggers.

While waiting for my food, I asked the restaurant manager whether my concern about the field was founded. She said she didn’t know about chiggers but that the field and ditches were infested with water moccasins, which she said are extremely aggressive. Needless to say, I walked back to the hotel on the paved shoulder of the frontage road.
