It was a beautiful day for riding, with yet another gentle tailwind pushing me into Texas, my fourth state for the tour.
I spent most of the day on the very lightly trafficked Hwy 9, which runs along the Mexico border.
My headquarters for the next two nights is El Paso’s historic Hotel Gardner.
One of the hotel’s claims to fame is that it served as a hideout for the gangster John Dillinger in the 1920s.
The author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men, The Road and All the Pretty Horses) also stayed here while doing much of his writing.
I was hoping to stay in the Dillinger room. But as best as I can figure it out, the actual room, which I was allowed to photograph (see below), is being upgraded and the hotel owner wanted me to stay in what appears to be an identical room directly below.
I plan to spend tomorrow sightseeing, getting a haircut and shipping home some of the items I have yet to use on the tour.
