It was 98 degrees yesterday, today was 102 with a stiff headwind and tomorrow is supposed be 92 with headwinds of up to 22 mph. What to do?
Well, in my book, this is a clear call for a rest day. So I have booked a room for two days at the lovely Whispering Palms Inn in Del Rio TX.
There’s not a lot to say about today’s ride except that for me it was more of an exercise in survival than of pleasure. The heat, headwinds and abrasive texture of much of the chip-seal shoulder made the day memorable for the wrong reasons.
Pretty much all a touring cyclist can do under such adverse conditions is start early and get in as much mileage as possible before conditions worsen.
When I finally made it into Del Rio, I got my kickstand adjusted at a bicycle store and arranged to have my chain and tires replaced at the REI in Austin during the week of April 19.
Tomorrow I will replenish my supplies at the local Walmart and rest up for Thursday, when hopefully the temps and headwinds will moderate.
