The locals supposedly call the first mile to the north on Hwy 187 out of the Lost Maples Natural Area “the Wall” because it’s steep. In fact, Ranger Wayne told me that 8-cylinder pickup trucks have been known to beg for mercy on the ascent.
But I really had no major issues with it this morning. It was easily within the range of my granny gear, maybe 8-11%? Slowly but surely is the trick.
The rest of the day’s riding featured some rolling terrain, but it was mostly trending downhill, so I made great time getting to the KOA campground in Kerrville TX.
I passed by some huge ranches with high fences along the road today, including one with a fence that was 15-feet high. These, I am told, are preserves where exotic animals are hunted.
I had been hoping to get a big Easter-ish meal in Hunt TX, which is supposedly the half-way point on the Southern Tier.
But the restaurants were closed for the religious holiday.
The small store at the Kerrville KOA was open when I arrived later that afternoon.
So I was able to put together a feast of sorts: a can of Bush’s red beans in chili sauce, a bag of Fritos, blueberry Pop-Tarts and a small container of chocolate ice milk.
