The big challenge for me today was negotiating my first scary Highway 101 tunnel.
I pushed the button at the darkened entrance, and the tunnel lights started flashing, alerting drivers to my presence.
When the lights are flashing, the drivers are supposed to slow down.
But I don’t believe most of them did.
There was a tiny sidewalk inside. But I figured it would be less dangerous to ride on the even dinkier, debris-littered shoulder.
Some cars and trucks got way too close as they swooped by.
Toward the end of the tunnel, somebody driving a huge RV tailed me at my own pace, slowing all the other traffic to a crawl.
Not sure why they did this but appreciated the courtesy.
Oregon’s tunnels and bridges are things I appreciated leaving far behind me!
Looks like temps are heading up from the usual 70s into the 90s over the next couple of days.
So I am contemplating taking the first rest of my journey. My hope is to find a relatively cool and shady place to hang my hammock and to wait for the cooler weather to return.
