Homecoming 2021; Day 3, June 18; 49.2 miles to Fort Casey Historical State Park; TM: 136.2

Felt great this morning after nine hours of sleep at Bay View SP. Weather, again, was ideal for cycling: cool and sunny with a refreshing breeze.

The scenery was spectacular. I really loved the long, lazy loop around Whidbey Island.

I stopped for the night at Fort Casey Historical SP, after 49.2 miles in the saddle, and I’m glad I decided to stay there. The Fort is very interesting, with multiple stations for the enormous 10-inch guns that once guarded the Puget Sound.

The lighthouse was closed by the time I walked over to it but I got a couple of decent photos.

The pier for the ferry to Port Townsend is right next to the campground, and I will try to get one of the earlier ferries in the morning.

In the evening, we saw two gorgeous orcas sounding in the bay close to the ferry channel.

The ferry stopped in the water until the orcas swam away

Most of today’s route was on roads with little traffic or roads with decent shoulders. The section on 20 south of Anacortes through the Deception Pass area was the exception: white-knuckle riding with lots of traffic and little shoulder to cry on.

Also, lots of hills today, and some were on the steep side.
