Homecoming 2021, Day 22, 7/7; 70.2 miles to Prairie Creek State Park; TM: 886.7

After crossing the border from Oregon to California today, I had to crank the pedals extra hard through 10 miles of steep hills south of Crescent City to avoid getting caught in a major construction shutdown of Highway 101.

I beat the 3 pm deadline by minutes.

Had I dawdled, I could have been forced to cool my heels until the road was scheduled to reopen at 7 pm.

After I emerged from the construction zone near Klamath CA, it was largely smooth sailing to a very nice hiker-biker campsite at the Elk Prairie campground.

I thought the final 8 miles to the campground through the redwood forests along the Newton B. Drury Parkway were among the most moving of this journey.

So happy somebody fought to save these solemn giants.

This section is said to be one of the more difficult ones on this route, with 3,600 feet of climbing.

I included the photo of the Fort Dick CA mom-and-pop store/restaurant because I had the chicken-fried steak special for lunch there.

It was enormous and delicious.

I felt fine leaving my bike unlocked here because there were several very beefy guards inside from the nearby Pelican Bay maximum security prison.
