Homecoming 2021, Day 8, 6/23; 64.8 miles to Cathlamet WA; TM: 393.7

Had to ride 10 miles farther than anticipated today because the RV campground I had hoped to stay at--County Line Park-- was unpleasant, to say the least, and the manager apparently didn’t want to host any more tent campers.

But I ended up in a far better place—Elochoman Marina in Cathalamet WA. The marina is on the banks of the Columbia River, just a short ferry ride away from Oregon. The campground, though pricy at $25, was comfortable and quiet, and there was a great pizza/sandwich restaurant just up the hill.

Most of today’s route was along beautiful, lightly-trafficked roads, but the last 20 miles along Highway 4 was heavily-trafficked and woefully-shouldered. White-knuckle riding.

Glad I was not deterred by the “road closed” sign outside Castle Rock WA.

Another touring cyclist I had just caught up with turned back at the first warning sign, telling me his app was suggesting an alternate route.

Looked to me that the alternate detour would require adding many miles to the day’s effort.

So I said I planned to continue on to investigate.

Turned out that the road, which had been washed out, would have been impassable for cars. But I easily walked my bike around the obstruction and was able to ride on a traffic-free road for many miles thereafter.

One for the good guys!
