Homecoming 2021, Day 24, 7/9; 69.5 miles to Burlington Campground; TM: 1,003.9

Had an overly interesting breakfast in Eureka CA this morning.

There were so many homeless people walking by the breakfast cafe downtown—including one half-naked woman who was only wearing one shoe and seemed to be severely deranged—that I asked the hostess if I could eat at a table on the sidewalk to keep a closer eye on my bike.

“Of course,” she said. “I totally understand.”

I know it’s rude to eat and run but I sure didn’t feel like dawdling over a second cup of coffee. Fastest sausage-and-egg chow down ever.

Thought that Ferndale, meanwhile, less than 20 miles down the road, was one of the friendliest and most charming towns I’ve ever visited.

I thoroughly enjoyed the roast beef and Swiss cheese sandwich I had for lunch at the town’s butcher shop, the Ferndale Meat Co.

Ferndale doesn’t seem to have the same sort of social issues Eureka has.

Also, thoroughly enjoyed the ride up to the Burlington campground in Humboldt Redwoods State Park on the Avenue of the Giants.
