Homecoming 2021, Day 15, 6/30, 31.8 miles to South Beach State Park; TM: 595.7

Last night’s dinner of ice cream, beer, Fritos and frijoles left me feeling drained this morning, and so I called it quits at 31.8 miles today, enough to get me to South Beach State Park.

Spectacular scenery once again, with the high in the low 60s.

Loved the Otter Crest Loop but didn’t care much for the lightly shouldered Yaquina Bay Bridge. Some ancient long beard shook his fist at me as he sped by in his SUV on the bridge. “Stay out of the road,” he said.

Looks like I’ll be rolling with a totally new crew soon, because Tom, Brittany, Matt and Taylor stopped at a campground 10 miles back and I think it unlikely that they’ll ever be able to catch up again.

I’ve enjoyed their company but feel that I need to step up the pace a bit or may never finish this thing.

New cyclists I met at the South Beach campground, top to bottom: Donald from Salem OR. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2008 but still runs his own household and regularly cycles along the Oregon coast. His doctors say exercise is good for his condition, he says.

Will and Claire, from Fort Bragg CA. They rely on their tandem bike's motor to help climb hills and get across bridges quickly.

Nathan and Julie, Dallas.
