If I come down with some exotic disease within the next several days, I will have a pretty good idea about its cause.
This morning, as I was packing up camp and sipping the last of my second cup of coffee, I noticed a bird turd stuck in the bottom of my cup—but not before I had already swallowed that last sip.
My hope is that the coffee was hot and acidic enough to sanitize the bird’s business.
Time will tell.
At least it was the work of a small bird, and not a seagull or buzzard.
Today’s ride was one of my tour’s most scenic yet.
I particularly enjoyed a 15-mile section on Rte. 12 and Old Hwy. 101.
I only saw saw 2 cars and 2 motorcycles through the whole section.
The route goes through a beautiful forest of mossy Douglas fir and spruce along Neskowin Creek from the town of Neskowin to Lincoln City.
Devil’s Lake Recreation Area, where I am camping tonight, is in Lincoln City OR, and as a rule, I’ve been trying to stay mostly in the route’s more rural parks on the theory that those are less likely to attract thieves and other miscreants than urban campgrounds.
But Brittany, Tom, Taylor and Matt also are planning to camp here tonight. So this park’s urban setting is less of a concern for me. For touring cyclists, there is safety in numbers, I think.
A few factoids about Matt and Taylor, my new vegan friends. They originally met on a Tinder date in LA. They prefer white rice and white bread to brown rice and whole wheat, and they avoid fats. When they’re not on their bikes, they live in a Ford Transit Connect van, mostly in the Kansas City MO area, where Taylor is studying to be a nurse. (I believe this technically means they are homeless?) They are hoping to move to Australia after Taylor gets her nursing degree.
