Homecoming 2021, Day 16, 34.5 miles to Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park; TM: 630.2

Awoke this morning to a wet tent for the first (and only, as it turned out) time during this journey. It’s been a drought year for sure out here, and I can’t complain about that but do hope they get eventually get more rain. They really need it, especially in California.

Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park, where I am staying tonight, has proved to be my favorite campground thus far. I just love the hiker-biker site, which is located in a glorious grove of giant Douglas firs.

There were only two other cyclists present: Milo and Neko, a father-son team of locals out for an overnight adventure.

There were no lockers and no cell service in the site. But a park ranger let me use his landline to let my girlfriend know I was OK.

I later discovered that I could get one AT&T bar on the otherworldly beach, which is a half mile hike from the campground through a hobbit-like ferny forest.

On my way to the campground, I stopped at the Green Bike Co-op in Waldport OR, where one of the volunteers installed a back-up taillight for me for $5.

I gave him a $5 tip for the effort.

Now I have three taillights to help alert drivers to my presence.

Can’t be too careful on those sometimes-lightly-shouldered-and-heavily-congested Highways 1 and 101!
