Homecoming 2021, Day 17, 7/2; 47.4 miles to William M. Tugman State Park; TM: 677.6

Got off to an 8:30 am start today, and there was little traffic until I reached Reedsport OR in the early afternoon.

But after that, the Fourth of July weekend traffic became a non-stop hurtling parade of heavy metal, and thankfully there was a good shoulder most of way to the William M. Tugman Memorial campground.

As of 6:30 pm, I was the only cyclist in the hiker-biker site but the rest of the campground was jam-packed.

I vastly preferred the the subdued feel of last night’s campground.

Here there are posted warnings about the need to protect your valuables from theft, and it’s a pit bull-walking motor sports-loving crowd that seems unfriendly at best. Looks like many of the campers are not here to worship nature but to shred it in their dune buggies. I am definitely not in my comfort zone.

So I will wake up early and try to get 50 miles down the road to the next state park, which is supposed to be much nicer, and may use back roads to try to get around the intimidating Coos Bay bridge.

Interesting note: At the Safeway in Reedsport, one of the store’s employees said the locals thought today’s 70-degree sunny weather was a heat wave. He said the usual temps were in the 60s with fog and overcast.
