Moved onto much easier cycling terrain today, mostly through massive agricultural fields.
The 15-mike bike trail from Marina CA to Monterey was particularly spectacular.
I had already paid $8 to stay at the city’s Veteran’s Memorial park.
But when I arrived at the biker-hiker site on the far side of the campground, it appeared clear that several—if not all—of the campers already there were homeless.
One young girl panhandled us shortly after our arrival, and my inner voice told me it would be prudent to get the heck out.
Brian, who arrived shortly after I did, agreed.
So I got on the phone, booked a motel room and we rode back down the hill into town.
On our way out of the campground, the park ranger told Brian that the homeless folks in the hiker-biker site were harmless. “They are just looking for a safe place to sleep, too,” the ranger said.
Down the hill, two Monterey police officers told us that they had not heard any complaints about homeless persons in the park.
But Ms. Casey, the Adventure Cycling Association chair, told me that she had also been uneasy about the homeless persons she saw in this same park during an earlier visit, and she also opted for a motel.
I usually sleep better in my tent than in motel rooms.
But in this case, I think the motel room was the better bet.
Over the years, I’ve learned to trust my intuition.
Besides, in this case, the hotel was very nice. It had a clean laundry, which we used to wash our clothes, and we were finally able to fully recharge our phones and cache batteries.
