Homecoming 2021, Day 32, 7/17; 56.8 miles to New Brighton State Beach; TM: 1,377.8

All that's left are some crumbs

Sometimes you get the raccoon.

Other times the raccoon gets you.

Last night, I am sorry to report, the raccoon got me—or actually it got my cookies.

Crafty little fellow for sure. Somehow this little Houdini managed to work its paws under the flaps of my rear pannier,  and was able to remove all of the cookies from inside, without opening or damaging the pannier itself.

The weirdest thing is I heard this theft in progress.

I even got up twice to investigate with my headlamp.

But the sneaky bugger laid low until I climbed back into my tent and went to sleep.

At least it didn’t damage the pannier. And it left the rest of my food alone. Lesson learned: Keep the food in the tent.

Today’s destination: New Brighton State Beach.

Enjoyed the ride through Santa Cruz. And I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the city’s beaches are.

Wish I would have taken more pictures, but I was in a hurry to get to the park.

We met a new cyclist at New Brighton: Joseph, who was heading back to his home in San Diego.

But he was traveling more slowly than we were and we never saw him again.

He later sent a text saying that he was planning to stop riding in Ventura and take the train the rest of the way home.
