Today was a big-mileage day for me with lots of hills and urban riding through the sprawling San Francisco metro area.
I got lost for more than an hour in San Francisco because construction projects on the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge prevented me from following the route indicated on my phone app.
But once I finally figured out how to get back on route, I enjoyed a tour of the Presidio and had a quiet lunch on a bench in Golden Gate Park.
The sidewalk on the Golden Gate Bridge itself was extremely congested with pedestrians and cyclists, and many of the pedestrians paid no heed to rules mandating where they were supposed to walk.
Once across this gargantuan monster is enough for me.
Thankfully, the showers were still working at the Half Moon Bay campground, and the water was hot.
Now, I’m in my tent, listening to the pounding of the surf on the beach maybe 50 yards away.
Brian, a 34-year-old Los Angeles software developer, is also in the hiker-biker site tonight.
He is on his first bicycle tour—from San Francisco to LA—and he and I are planning to team up and ride together to LA to watch each other’s backs.
It’s good to have a teammate, particularly on a tour that goes through urban areas where there’s a higher probability that somebody might try to steal your bike or gear.
Brian’s traveling light, with only a bivy, a sleeping bag, a light jacket and no sleeping pad.
For food, he’s packed some snacks and is relying mostly on restaurants and grocery stores for his chow.
He’s also got high-performance skinny tires on his carbon-fiber bike. It will be interesting to see how it all holds up.
